Robert Caldwell decided to refine his brand and lineup of cigars this year. Introducing a new offering in the Blind Man’s Bluff (Honduran made) and removing the JV line from his selections. He did add revamped JV line variations of the Muricas, Sevillana, and Gibraltar at this years IPCPR known as Iberian Express.
Wrapper: Ecuadorian Habano

Strength: Medium – Full
Size: Robusto 5.0 x 50
The first thing you notice is the band on this on cigar, it has a great color scheme and the art as usual for a Caldwell is awesome. The wrapper has a sweet tobacco scent with a rich brown wrapper and heavy leaf lines. Cold draw has a light pepper with tobacco.
First puffs– A rush of black pepper and cayenne pepper blast the senses. The strongest start to a Caldwell cigar that I can remember. Heavy cedar and earth are also present. Easy draw but an uneven burn.
First third– The black pepper is still lingering heavily along with a black licorice flavor. There is also a taste of wheat grass and charred steak, kind of a meaty thickness to the smoke. The draw is good but the burn line is not doing well and its getting worse.
Second third– Still a spicy cigar and it’s not letting up at all, earthiness with some licorice mixed in and new to the flavors is some deep dark cocoa. Overall the flavors leave a dull chalky taste in the back of the palate. For me at this moment it could use an offsetting flavor, something sweet. The draw has improved and the burn lines are evening out just a little bit. The strength is a medium-full now.
Final third– The flavors have mainly remained the same, the strength has picked up though. It has become a lot creamier and smooth now. Much more enjoyable by far than the first half was.
Overall it was a bit of a lack luster smoke in my opinion compared to the past offerings from Caldwell. I do appreciate however that they are trying to do something that is outside of their normal wheelhouse. I would say that its still worth a try, but i’m not going in on a box of these. Seek these out and give them a shot, its flavor’s may suite your palate.
